The world did not end. That was one good thing. But again fate reared its ugly head. Any crisis is one too many. And, two terrible things will be remembered about the year 2012. A hurricane hit the East Coast of the U.S. and the death of many children occurred in Connecticut. Frankly there was too much media about it for myself. Or maybe it was too much bad news to comprehend.
Many a good movie has this theme, overcoming adversity. We have heard the expression think global and act local. These or any other adversities may form our lives. It is a matter of reaction or adjustment. If we worked in any of those emergency rooms or ICUs where those people needed acute care we would gladly take action. Most of us see it every day. Many of us know the seriousness of our actions which may change another’s life. And, most of us respond directly to those immediate needs.
When these big events occur it is hard to know where to begin. So think global and act local. One of our New Jersey Respiratory delegates was at a National AARC meeting and messaged the Southern New Jersey Society’s director to remind him that the AARC had disaster funds for respiratory therapists in New Jersey. The South Jersey director immediately sent emails to all area respiratory managers, so to spread the word. The team effort was excellent. And it was our team.
I prefaced our Annual Atlantic City Conference with a brief newsletter. It stated that the national election year had an impact on our industry, and our annual NJSRC meeting would be held there in Atlantic City. That NJSRC meeting displayed how contributing to your professional society can impact all of us. The AARC disaster fund was one contribution which may help someone in crisis. Thinking about these huge events may motivate us to participate locally. Come to our meetings. Together everyone achieves more.
